The Royal’s Secret
Why was I here again? Last time I came to this revolting back alley I nearly died. I would need to find the locket and quickly if I wanted to get out alive. Dust and dirt collided with my hair as I strutted through the alley, but today was not my lucky day. Swaying the silver chain in his left hand and holding a dagger in the other he walked up to me “Give me the locket,Ryan” I demanded. He would do harm judging by his perfect hands,he was more likely to handle a cloth then a sword unlike me.
Maria was what I called myself but I think Dirty demon would describe me more, a mud skinned teenager with silver eyes and tattered, dull brown hair. Being a thief is tough so I became tougher with muscle crawling over every inch of my body, my now deceased friend Lilyanna always said I was a dark and brooding mess but with the feral grin that makes people's skin crawl I think she was mislead. Maybe she was right,I do have a hard punch and will insult anyone who gets in my way but life is hard if anyone knew that I thought it would be her. I started to walk away from Ryan.
“Oy, I ain’t finished with you yet!” The man was pushing his luck but finally some fun let's say hello “What do you want?” I yelled, never having friends or family you tend to have bad social skills. He replied with “To kick your head in!” “Sorry sir but your request has been canceled” He charged like a mad ogre,in one swift movement I had slid under him and grabbed the locket then launched into a run. Do it for Oka that doggy breath and pom pom hair,Maria leaped onto the dumpster lid and vaulted over the brick wall, then free fell into the icy sea.
As I shuffled towards the church sleeping willows ruffled their leaves, sending hints of pollen swirling through the air and fluttering towards Maria. The clovers seemed to shift elsewhere as if to get away from me, as I strolled through the thick pasture towards the towering, ancient building ahead. The crisp morning air swept through my lifeless hair waving it around my dirty chin.
Clouds rolled through the sky, soon a shower of water would come and usher us into any shelter to be seen. My shabby black shoes ascended to the old, jagged path, clusters of dust floating from their resting place once Maria was near. Tripping from where I was now would leave a fatal wound, why hasn’t the priest removed this yet,it would do some good.
Cracks scattered throughout the path seemed to gape at me with my scratches and all. The aroma of roses crashed into me along with a faint whiff of violets and honey probably from the wild bee hives scattered everywhere collecting pollen for the Queen.
A hum hovered around me, viciously I clapped my hands, why did it have to be spring? Bees are the worst, even flies are better. “Maria, leave it alone” the priest shouted strutting past Maria to weed all the daffodils and blue bells. Pests, why do we even have them?
Home was always the place I felt safe but for some reason today get off, like a piece of the puzzle missing. The priest strided to me will a phony smile, “Maria today I must ask you to dig another grave” he whispered, the smile fading “For whom Papa?” I asked, he stilled for a moment then spoke in a spiritless tone “The King has been found poisoned,we are hosting the funeral” I gaped at him only nodding before shuffling within the fortress.
As Maria lumbered towards the basement trap door something clicked,of course that's why everything felt wrong, the king is dead but how would anyone even be able to get close to the castle? Staring up to the heavy, black beams, they now looked like they could collapse at any moment being nearly vertical under the spiked, grey roof. The red stained glass built throughout the walls now reminded me of blood swirling through my veins, pain was not new to Maria but it hurt more and more every time.
The day I had been dreading came quicker than we expected due to changes of the weather. I dressed in the finest dress I could buy. It had white swirls with patterns of faint pink, the rest in a cute peach. It was perfect for Calami being knee high and sleeveless.
As I shuffled out the door Papa came rushing towards me with a piece of paper,he handed it to me with a light smile. I read out loud “My Dear Maria, please do not judge our actions for we were young and restless,we thought it was best but I always loved you as well as Remona. You must be bonded with the princess to become queen, our kingdom needs you more than ever. I have one request please find my assassin,he flead for oakwood forest. Love your true father, king Lucifer.”
I stared at papa or just the priest breathless, he blurted “You must go now,you will always be my daughter just also my queen” I hugged him,he returned with a rib crushing embrace. “Go” the Priest grumped.
Rushing to the carriage I nearly slipped on the step, luckily Papa caught me. I stared mesmerized at the girl in front of me as I sat down. I stuttered “I am Maria and y-you are the princess, well of course you're the princess with your tiara hehe.” She stared before replying with “who are you?”. So much for a good first impression “ I'm Maria,you-your . . . . . sister” I admitted. “Really Yay!”She squealed, “well really I'm your half sister”. “Still,I’ve got a sister” “Miss you will alarm the horses if you continue that squealing” the driver Hollered in a strange voice. We went the rest of the ride in silence apart from The princess trying (but failing) to contain her excitement.
Soon after the Princess outburst she whispered “My name is Cara by the way” The driver interrupted with “Miss we are here”. As I hoped out of the fluro blue carriage I tipped the driver before heading to the golden, red light surrounded by tall figures that jumped the light two by two. “We have to do that” Cara sighed. “Do what!” I asked loudly, she sighed before saying “Jump the fire silly, have you never done it,you know be bonded?”. I just stared at the people ahead,”I guess not” she mumbled.
Without hesitation she grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the fire, and went into a full on sprint towards it. She was fast I was faster, dodging nearby people as I went,we ran towards and finally I was ready for this,I jumped. Heat coursed through me sending jolts to my nerves every now and then,we hit wet sand once over the fire panting in a heap we smiled at each other.
I could feel Cara’s thoughts, feelings even emotions, something was tying me to her like a chain no a-a bond. Love was different to this. No it couldn't be that it was like family. She only grew happier as I tried to figure out what was happening,we were bonded. I Stood and walked towards the forest,Cara close behind.
Soon we were deep in the trees, seating myself on a fairly clean log,a guard came sprinting along with a velvet cushion. He carefully placed it on the log then making eye contact with the princess he patted the cushion and facing us shuffled away. Not contain my laughter I snorted half the time in Caras face, “Being a princess is a nightmare as you can see”. Too full of laughter I only nodded, “Cara you must read this,it-its from our father” I handed the roughly folded paper to her letting the bond sink in as I waited.
After a minute I confessed “Once you are ready we’re going to find the assassin” her eyes light up “I’ve always wanted to be a ninja!” Cara squealed,I was never going to get used to that. “That doesn't mean we are going to be ninjas” I grumped “But that doesnt mean I can’t be a ninja!” she sneered ”Fine you be a ninja but I want nothing to do with it” I shot back.
We spent a day looking for outfits (well more just Cara, I just tagged along) she ended up picking a very, very, very, very, very and very bright fluro outfit and I’m not exaggerating. We were ready with everything in our packs. “It’s time for the hunt” I growled and of course Cara squealed “YAYYYYY!!!, wait what?”
It was Time for an
ADVENTURE!
